Rage Against the Machine Acappella Protest Songs

This is old news by now, but worth checking out nonetheless.  The LA Times has an article on Rage Against the Machine’s set being prevented by state authorities at the Ripple Effect, a concert held in Minnesota alongside the Republican Convention.
Below are the two songs Rage performed amongst the crowd, acappella with a megaphone.

Quote from NY Lt. Gov. David A. Paterson

In the wake of the Elliot Spitzer scandal and ultimate resignation, I came across this quote from New York Lt. Gov. David A. Paterson:
from NY Times: Reaching Out, Paterson Offers Different Tone
And when asked whether he, like Mr. Spitzer, had ever patronized a prostitute, Mr. Paterson could not suppress his trademark dagger wit.
He paused, gave [...]

John McCain Mashup Video - Yes We Can!

Boing Boing directed me to this video mixing John McCain with music and singers. Its worth a quick look. It certainly has the best use so far of the “Bomb bomb bomb Iran” soundbite.

Crazy Talk: Guns on Campus For Safety

Why such a huge percentage of the North American mass killings happen at educational institutions is something that desperately needs to be figured out. I doubt the answer will be quick, or simple, or even satisfying, but until we get a better handle on why this crazy shit happens, we will have to keep [...]

Canadian Copyright Legistlation

Canadian Industry Minister Jim Prentice is still trying to import American-style copyright law similar to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The massive failings of the DMCA have been reported widely, and it seems pretty clear that any similar legislation does not benefit anyone outside of the recording and movie industries.
Michael Geist has written a [...]

Jesse Ventura Throws Down

Sometimes great wisdom is found in the most unlikely places, such as from the mouth of ex-Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura. In this 10 minute clip, Jesse is confronted by media pundit Donny Deutsche (MSNBC) with the usual hostility that these types often bring when “debating” anyone that isn’t quite ready to send every brown [...]

Where’s Kucinich?

Wow, all the hoopla surrounding these primaries is really quite astounding. As usual however, the hoopla is reserved only for a grand total of 4 or 5 front running candidates, leaving the rest of the field virtually ignored.
For instance, with all this talk of hope and progressive change that gets associated with Barack Obama, politicians [...]

Chomsky on Adam Smith and Mass Education

The ol‘ professa, Noam Chomsky, doesn’t really get the credit he deserves. Superficial encounters with his work, either sympathetic or critical, seem to dominate most perspectives of it, and I think there’s an unwarranted “Chomsky-fatigue” simply because they guy has been around so damned long. Regardless, I’ve watched this mean carry on debates in french, [...]

Canadian National Igloo

Canadian comedian Rick Mercer’s show ‘Talking to Americans’ occasionally has some good segments. I didn’t catch this when it aired, or maybe forgot about it, but am glad it came to my attention again. Certainly, its more relevant after the Iowa results.
The show involves Mercer interviewing Americans and exposing ignorance of Canada, Canadians, [...]

The Iowa Caucus: Surprises, Controversies.

In case you’ve been living under a rock or have at least been avoidant of the American cable news channels, you know full well that the Iowa caucuses chimed in last night, beginning the process of selection for their party’s presidential candidates. The results (source):
Democratic: Obama - 37.6%, Edwards - 29.7%, Clinton - 29.5%, Richardson [...]
