A Quebec woman on long-term sick leave is fighting to have her benefits reinstated after her employer’s insurance company cut them, she says, because of photos posted on Facebook…

…She said her insurance agent described several pictures Blanchard posted on the popular social networking site, including ones showing her having a good time at a Chippendales bar show, at her birthday party and on a sun holiday — evidence that she is no longer depressed, Manulife said…

…Blanchard said that on her doctor’s advice, she tried to have fun, including nights out at her local bar with friends and short getaways to sun destinations, as a way to forget her problems…

…Her lawyer Tom Lavin said Manulife’s investigation was inappropriate. “I don’t think for judging a mental state that Facebook is a very good tool,” he said.

A senior intelligence official, Donald Kerr, the US Principal Deputy Director of Intelligence wants to redefine what privacy is. Now, this is not really a huge shocker considering the ongoing wiretapping controversy, but this is definitely going a bit further. The idea that we should accept the government spying on us and trust them to do anything with the information is simply ridiculous. I doubt there are many starry-eyed idealists out there that still believe even a small majority of elected officials are in this to truly serve the people, let alone that everyone in government who would handle this information will do so with only the most noble intentions. Horseshit. This is really scary. Even worse, a quick search of two major papers showed no comment on this. That’s even scarier.

The Guardian: Definition Changing for People’s Privacy

Privacy no longer can mean anonymity, says Donald Kerr, the principal deputy director of national intelligence. Instead, it should mean that government and businesses properly safeguard people’s private communications and financial information.

Now this is paraphrased, but check out the transcript of the speech, linked at the bottom of the Guardian article or here.
