Boozed-Up Flies Show Homosexual Tendencies

Researchers at Pennsylvania State University ran an experiment with male Fruit Flies to study the effects of alcohol on sexual inhibitions. The researchers build a custom fly lock-down booze facility called the ‘Flypub’ in which to run the trials. There is a video too, for all you fly-voyeurs out there.

Randy flies reveal how booze affects inhibitions

“The first time they were exposed to alcohol, groups of male flies became noticeably intoxicated but kept themselves to themselves. But with repeated doses of alcohol on successive days, homosexual courtship became common.

From the third day onwards, the flies were forming “courtship chains” of amorous males.”

Apparently, if you lock up a bunch of males, feed them booze, they will form an impromptu conga-like line, dance around, and get a bit touchy-feely.

Interesting enough, there was no mention that when males are forcibly locked up in a large group, even without booze they have a tendency to perform sexual acts they might otherwise have avoided.
